Pictures from Vaginas Take Back the Capitol in Lansing. It was the most amazing experience I have ever had. There were about 5,000 people present, and it brought me to tears knowing that all of those people showed up for choice. I am seriously in awe of the women of Michigan.

I wish my camera hadn’t died, otherwise I would have way more pictures.

 • Dr. George Tiller’s killing was not justifiable homicide, it was murder.
 • Blowing up abortion clinics is terrorism.
 • Defacing and covering abortion clinics in graffiti is vandalism.
 • Chanting “You’re next!” at doctors and clinic…

"And then, the day before I graduated from college, the news flooded my inbox: in Kansas, Dr. George Tiller had been shot. Point blank. In the head. In his church.

Welcome to America. You don’t know shit.

One of the things that was most different, and most complicated, about this country was the vehemence and violence of its anti-abortion politics. In Australia, where I grew up, there are people who are deeply anti-abortion. There are anti-choice organizations, and there are protesters with signs outside clinics. But clinics don’t get bombed. Australia doesn’t have to pass laws mandating where protestors can stand outside clinics to ensure they don’t prevent patients from getting in to see a doctor. Australia’s abortion laws aren’t ideal, but we don’t have mandatory penetrative ultrasounds and we don’t require doctors to lie to patients about what abortion does and we don’t have politicians going around saying that the state should force a rape victim to carry her rapist’s baby. And where I come from, people don’t get shot over abortion."

Today is the 3-year anniversary of Dr. Tiller’s murder by an anti-choice zealot.

"

Remember? Remember how our president gave speeches shortly thereafter about finding “common ground” on abortion? Don’t you wonder where, exactly, that common ground is? Is it on “Let’s come to a compromise on how many healthcare providers you assassinate per year”? In the wake of a Southern string of 3 targeted burglaries at clinics and 3 women’s health buildings set aflame (some of which don’t even provide abortion care), wouldn’t you really like to know what common ground looks like? “Let’s agree that no one likes fires in the summer; you could at least save arson for the winter months”?

Where’s a libertarian declaring “Those who would trade liberty for security…” when you could actually use one?

Dr. Tiller didn’t fuck around like that. They massed outside his office, and he had a huge sign printed: “Women need abortions, and I’m going to provide them.” No mincing, no equivocating, and no compromising his patients’ care. He went to work every day to protect women’s freedoms. Someone shot him in both arms, and he went back to work the next day. He had a gate at the clinic and wore a bulletproof vest — but his murderer shot him in the head, at church.

Yep, that’s exactly how I think on reproductive rights.

We never talk about people who need or want abortions as living things. All the focus goes on embryos, because for some reason, they’re more important than the people who are carrying them.

That is such a powerful sign…
