“I fucking made it.”
Each season finale of Nurse Jackie has had some sort of major ending occur for a period in Jackie’s life. The major tensions of the season resolve brilliantly and unexpectedly, but it usually feels like just a chapter ending. The finales have always felt like the opening of another door. Not in the way where you feel on edge waiting for new episodes to start again, but knowing there is more story to tell to complete Jackie’s narrative. Unlike previous seasons, this season’s finale felt like a deserved exhale for the audience and the characters. The previous seasons have had strong conclusions, but this felt more like a bookend. As trite as a simultaneous death and birth plot-line can be, what the writers were able to have it mean for Jackie’s larger story made it the most powerful finale yet. Jackie may have future issues with her family, her job, and her addiction and she may end up losing in the long run, but she is finally in a position where we can believe that maybe she will be okay.
If the show starts to go down hill next season with the two co-creators stepping down as the show-runners, I am going to have it end in my head with this episode. With this moment.
